About Me

I am a single woman in her mid thirties who is currently going through the exciting and nerve-wracking experience of having a baby by myself, using donor sperm through a fertility clinic. Also known as being a “single mother by choice (SMBC)” or a “choice mum”.

It should perhaps be “symbiont”, rather than “symbiote”, but both are technically correct enough, and I rather like the tenuous link to Venom. Just whistle past it, biologists.

As I write for a living, the only way this blog is getting written in my free time is if I don’t think too much about section structure, flow, or editing what I have written – otherwise it might start feeling like work. So it may come across as almost stream-of-consciousness, for which I apologize. Unless you are into that sort of thing, in which case: you are welcome!

  1. Are there any social or Facebook groups in NZ for smbc? I conceived in UK where there is a well established network and am keen to meet other kiwis in a similar situation.

    1. Not that I could find when I looked. But that was way back when I started this blog, so something might have popped up since then… I know there are a lot of us out there, but I wonder if the smaller population in NZ makes that sort of thing less likely.
